Biography
Charles Newton was born in Stuart, a small agricultural community in west central Iowa, where he spent his boyhood. After graduating from the local school system, he pursued a degree in education at Northwest Missouri State University. Newton received his diploma in 1950 and was immediately drafted into the United States Army for a two-year hitch, part of which he spent in the Korean Theater of Operations.
He earned a master’s degree in history at the University of New Hampshire after his military service and began a teaching career that spanned 36 years, 34 of which were spent in Des Moines, Iowa. During his teaching career he taught world history and English in grades 7─12.
In retirement, Newton was an occasional guest columnist for the Des Moines Register, where he commented on the educational and political scenes. His interests include golf, woodworking, and reading. He has maintained a keen interest in public education and became involved in this book in an effort to unmask some of the flaws gnawing at the vitality of the American education system.
